The short answer
Wasp control means removing the nest rather than just killing visible wasps, then treating the eaves, soffits and overhangs with a residual so returning workers do not simply rebuild in the same spot. Timing matters enormously: nests are small and easily handled in spring, and large and defensive by late summer.
What is nesting on your house
- Paper wasps — the most common in Central Texas. Open, umbrella-shaped combs under eaves, porch ceilings, grills and playground equipment. Not especially aggressive, but they defend the nest vigorously.
- Yellowjackets — nest in ground cavities, wall voids and attics. Far more aggressive than paper wasps, and capable of stinging repeatedly. Colonies peak in late summer.
- Mud daubers — solitary, build tube-shaped mud nests, and are essentially harmless. They also prey on spiders, including widows. We normally recommend leaving them.
- Cicada killers — large and alarming-looking, burrowing in bare soil in late summer. Males cannot sting; females rarely do. Also usually best left alone.
Why late summer is the dangerous window
Colonies build through the season, so a nest that held a dozen wasps in spring can hold hundreds by August. At the same time, the colony shifts from raising brood to seeking sugars, which is why wasps start showing up around drinks, trash cans and outdoor dining in late summer.
They are also at their most defensive then. If a nest is somewhere you pass regularly — a doorway, garage, or above a patio — it is worth handling before that point.
How we treat wasps
- Locate and identify — including nests inside wall voids and soffits, which are often only revealed by watching where wasps enter.
- Treat and remove the nest, timed for when the colony is least active.
- Residual eave and soffit treatment across the roofline, porch ceilings and other preferred sites so returning wasps do not rebuild.
- Follow-up where a colony is large or located in a void.
A word of caution: knocking down a nest yourself, spraying it from a ladder, or plugging a wall-void entrance are the three most common ways people get stung badly. Wasps in a sealed void will find another way out — sometimes into the room below.

We would rather you did not. Partial treatment scatters a colony and makes them defensive, and most serious stinging incidents happen when someone sprays a nest from a ladder and then has to retreat down it.

Yes. Void nests need particular care because sealing the entrance without treating the colony can drive wasps into the living space. Tell us where you see them entering and we will handle it properly.
Generally not. They are solitary, non-aggressive, and prey on spiders including black widows. We will remove the mud tubes if you want them gone cosmetically, but they are doing you a favour.
