The short answer
Effective mosquito control has two halves: a barrier treatment applied to the shaded undersides of foliage where adult mosquitoes rest during the day, and source reduction — finding and eliminating the standing water where larvae develop. Why your yard has mosquitoes
Mosquitoes don’t travel far. The species that bite you in your backyard almost certainly bred within a few hundred feet of it — often on your own property.
It takes remarkably little water. A saucer under a potted plant, a clogged gutter, a tarp fold, a pet bowl, a low spot that holds water for a week, or an untreated rain barrel is enough to produce hundreds of mosquitoes. Bromeliads and other water-holding plants are a common overlooked source.
Central Texas mosquito season
Our season typically runs March through November, and in mild winters mosquitoes stay active well past that. Activity spikes after rain, and again in late summer when temperatures shorten the larval development cycle.
Two groups matter locally. Culex mosquitoes are the primary West Nile virus vector in Texas and are most active at dawn and dusk. Aedes mosquitoes — the aggressive daytime biters with striped legs — breed in very small containers and are the ones that make a backyard unusable in the afternoon.
How we treat mosquitoes
A treatment visit covers:
- Inspection for breeding sites — we walk the property looking for standing water and either eliminate it or treat it with a larvicide where it can’t be drained.
- Barrier application — a residual product applied to the underside of foliage, dense shrubs, fence lines and other shaded harborage where adults rest.
- Targeted attention to the areas you actually use — patios, play areas, dining spaces.
Barrier treatments are typically repeated on a monthly cycle through the season, because the residual breaks down under Texas sun and rain. We’ll be straightforward with you about that rather than promising one visit solves it.
What you can do between visits
- Walk the yard weekly after rain and empty anything holding water.
- Clear gutters and check downspout splash blocks.
- Refresh pet bowls and birdbaths every few days.
- Keep grass and shrubs trimmed to reduce shaded resting sites.
- Repair torn window and door screens.
